Overview

HP-UX 11i Encrypted Volume and File System is the latest offering in a lineup of HP-UX 11i security features that provide layered security and in-depth protection. At its core, EVFS provides a fast and efficient software-based data encryption service for the HP-UX 11i v2 Update 2 and 11i v3 operating systems. This service is provided in a transparent manner, which means that no application-level changes are needed.

EVFS encrypts data using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). AES is a block-cipher algorithm adopted as an encryption standard by the U.S. Government.

EVFS provides volume encryption of databases and file systems to protect data while at rest in storage; as such, EVFS encrypts all data on the encrypted volume using the same symmetric key. An encrypted volume can be thought of as a disk partition that can house a regular file system (such as VxFS), or data that is accessed in raw mode for use by applications such as a databases.

On IA, EVFS is integrated with HP-UX KCM (Kernel Crypto Module).

New in EVFS 2.2
On IA, HP-UX EVFS is FIPS-compliant when used with HPUX-KCM 2.1.

The following table lists the latest Web release versions of EVFS available on the HP-UX 11i v2 and 11i v3 operating systems.

Product Operating System Bundle Version Number Release Date
EVFS HP-UX 11i v2 A.01.01.02 August 2009
EVFS HP-UX 11i v3 A.02.02.00 April 2014

Features and Benefits
The main advantage of EVFS is robust physical security: if media containing sentitive infomation is lost or stolen, the encrpted data is not compromised - only those with access to the symmetric encryption keys can access the data in clear or unencrypted form.

EVFS also provides flexible and robust key management using a combination of public/private key and secret key cryptographic schemes that allow administrators to share access to protected data without having to share passphrases. An added advantage of this approach is the ability to establish a special recovery key, which can be used in cases where owner keys are lost or forgotten.

EVFS is designed and implemented with special consideration for high availability environments. As such, EVFS has been fully tested with Serviceguard to ensure correct interoperability. In addition, EVFS has been tested with a variety of other solutions available from HP, most notably VxFS, HFS, LVM and VxVM. EVFS is tested and approved for HP Storage Works Reference Information and Manager (RIM) for Databases Encapsulated Archive.

EVFS also has been tested with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector to provide additional backup options.
